Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18 on the 18th of July 1994. She also grew up in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Russell was born to white and black parents. She grew up on her mother's side. Russell recalled how as a child she felt unaccepted by her peers because of the color of her skin. Their parents were struggling with their finances and were always moving, relocating their lives 16 times to follow her father's work. However, despite this hardship, Russell mentioned how in her younger years "there always was a chance for reinventing yourself, creating something new."As as a young person, Russell was already artistically inclined. At first, she was interested in pursuing a career in ballet. Later, she wanted to become a painter. Russell was only 18 when she started her first acting class. She saved money from work to purchase an automobile and drove to Los Angeles to audition. She would go back to work once her savings ran out and then resume the audition process. This routine was followed for four more years until she was offered her first television role.
